About This Project

This project transformed a large, unfinished basement in a charming 1930's Minneapolis home into a vibrant space for family fun and relaxation. The redesign began with relocating the furnace, allowing for all utilities to be neatly confined within the laundry room. This strategic move not only maximized space but also opened up opportunities for a designated home office, a perfect blend of functionality and comfort. The family envisioned a versatile area where they could enjoy leisure activities together. To achieve this, we maintained a spacious section of the basement for a ping pong table, board games, and a home entertainment system, creating an inviting atmosphere for gatherings and family game nights. A standout feature of this renovation is the custom-built Cedar sauna, elegantly tucked into an unused corner behind the stairs. Crafted to accommodate four people, the sauna radiates a warm, inviting aroma of cedar wood and offers ambient lighting that enhances the relaxation experience. The option to pour water over hot rocks for steam creates a true spa-like retreat, ideal for Minnesota's frigid winters. In addition to recreational areas, we also focused on enhancing comfort and utility. A modern bathroom was added, complete with a walk-in shower featuring a sleek glass screen, digital controls, and a full articulated shower head. The heated floors and a towel radiator chase away the chill typically associated with basements, ensuring a cozy experience year-round. The craftsmanship is evident in the Cedar plank ceiling that ties in seamlessly with the sauna's design, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the space. On the opposite side of the stairs, a dedicated home gym was established, benefiting from the same stylish ceiling. An egress window was installed in the gym, flooding the area with natural light and meeting safety requirements. The result is a multi-functional, contemporary basement that beautifully balances relaxation, fitness, and family activities, making it an ideal retreat for the homeowners.
