PRATT BACK YARD MAKEOVER (MANHATTA BEACH) JDS Outdoor Designs proudly unveils the remarkable renovation of the Pratt home in Manhattan Beach, an exploration of design quality and landscaping potential. This entire renovation not only beautified the backyard, but it also provided greater functionality as a gathering spot for family bonding and relaxation. The exemplified a cohesive blend of both hardscape and softscape features. To begin with, we designed and implemented a custom stone patio utilizing locally sourced flagstone that was entirely consistent with the coastal environment. This durable, timeless surface is well suited for entertaining with ample space for outdoor dining and recreation. Additionally, we constructed a modern fire pit with comfortable seating to create a cozy place to gather on cool beach evenings. Understanding the plights of coastal landscaping, we selected salt tolerant plants that would thrive as a result of salt spray and sandy soil. Drought-resistant native plants including California lilacs and succulents were layered for color and texture and were strategically arranged for four-season interest. Dense ferns and ornamental grasses were included to provide screening and layer, while also allowing our irrigation system to function on the health of the plants. Another very special aspect of the was the custom wooden pergola, which not only contributes visual interest but also provides much needed shade for a year-round outdoor space. LED lights were included in the to illuminate walkways, highlight special features in the landscaping, and to continue the magical experience after dark. Even with the gardening challenges of a sloped yard, our team terraced the allocated area of the yard to create separate zones and space. The terracing created individual spaces but also still allowed zones to flow together providing maximum usable outdoor space and visual depth and dimension to the design. This allowed this formerly unused garden space to turn into an extraordinary outdoor space. In total, the Pratt backyard make over created an extraordinary garden that balanced beauty, function, and sustainability. The homeowners were able to enjoy a stunning outdoor room that reflects their experiences, creating memories with friends and family in their new garden.
