About This Project

The Italianate Residence project in Dexter, MI, is a remarkable transformation of a landmark 1860’s era home, thoughtfully designed to enhance functionality while preserving its historic charm. The owners, a growing family, sought to improve their daily ingress and egress experience, addressing the limitations of a cramped entryway and the absence of an attached garage. Additionally, the need for a guest suite to accommodate frequent visitors was paramount. The homeowners expressed a strong desire to maintain the integrity of their beautiful old home, emphasizing their aversion to alterations that might detract from its historical significance. To meet these requirements, our design team developed a unique solution: a “hyphen” — a multi-functional entry breezeway that elegantly connects the main house to a newly constructed garage and an in-law suite above. This design choice not only facilitates ease of access but also creates a seamless visual connection between the old and the new. The hyphen serves as a transitional space, inviting natural light into the home while providing a welcoming entry experience that complements the architectural style of the Italianate residence. Craftsmanship played a crucial role in this project, with careful attention to detail in the selection of materials and finishes that reflect the home’s original character. Traditional elements were integrated into the new construction, including custom woodwork and period-appropriate window designs, ensuring that the addition harmonizes with the historic aesthetic.
