About This Project

Cape Cod Barn and Pool, Orleans, MA Designed by Kimberly Mercurio Landscape Architecture, the Cape Cod Barn and Pool in Orleans, MA embodies the aesthetic and functional harmony of landscape design. Located in beautiful Cape Cod, this was grounded in nature and its modern characteristics to create an inviting outdoor experience. The main focus of this design is an impressive, custom-built pool, surrounded by a natural stone patio which contrasts the rustic barn, featuring locally-sourced bluestone for its long-lasting quality and beautiful color. With a goal of providing color and texture throughout the seasons while requiring very low maintenance and environmentally sustainable plantings, native ornamental grasses, and perennial flowering plants were used, and also provided dramatic planting drifts. One of the hurdles presented at the onset of a like this was the site’s sloped topography. We incorporated reclaimed wood retaining walls that serve not only structural purposes but also brought an organic feel to the landscape. In this picturesque setting, this also allows for a seamless transition between the barn and pool, creating a multi-functional space for entertaining and relaxing. The overall result is a landscape with a cohesive transition from modern function to rustic charm, and importantly, the client was thrilled with how their outdoor experience changed for the better while keeping the character of the property intact.
