About This Project

The Family Recreation Area project in West Des Moines, IA, expertly revitalizes an overgrown raised firepit space into a welcoming and functional outdoor retreat. The original area, while still in use, required significant attention to restore its charm and usability. The project began with the careful demolition of the existing walls, followed by the construction of new, robust structures using large boulders that not only enhance stability but also add a natural aesthetic to the environment. The grading adjustments ensured proper drainage and accessibility, creating a more inviting atmosphere. A stunning new bluestone flagstone patio was installed, designed to seamlessly integrate with the upgraded firepit, which was crafted using matching stone to maintain visual cohesion. This thoughtful choice of materials enhances the overall elegance of the area while providing a durable surface for gatherings. The landscape design incorporates river rock, inspired by the serene beauty of dry stream beds, which lines the pathways and adds a textured contrast to the smooth bluestone pavers. Future plantings will further enrich this space, with plans for large leaf hostas that mimic the look of water lilies, creating a tranquil setting. Small pockets of cattails are also anticipated, contributing to the natural feel of the area. In preparation for these features, the planting bed was seeded with cover crops, including radish, wheat, and clover, to promote soil health until the dwarf apple trees, American cranberries, and strawberries are ready to thrive. Additionally, horseradish was strategically planted in the background, adding both visual interest and a culinary touch. This project, completed within a budget of $7,501 to $10,000, beautifully transforms the Family Recreation Area into a vibrant, functional, and harmonious outdoor space for family gatherings and relaxation, inviting all to enjoy its serene ambiance.
