About This Project

The Historic Charles Dickey House, a stunning example of 1930s architecture in Honolulu, was meticulously transformed to honor its rich heritage while accommodating the modern lifestyle of its current owners. This project, completed in June 2008, marks the fourth collaboration with the client, whose vision centered around preserving the home's historical integrity while creating an inviting and elegant living environment. The design choices reflect a deep respect for the original architecture, characterized by its distinctive craftsmanship and period details. Every effort was made to retain the home’s historic features, such as the intricate woodwork and classic Hawaiian design elements that define its character. The incorporation of contemporary materials, while subtle, ensures that the home meets the demands of modern living without compromising its historical essence. Elegant finishes, including rich hardwood flooring and custom cabinetry, were selected to complement the existing architecture and enhance the overall aesthetic. A significant highlight of the project was the creation of a dedicated display area in the Living Room, specifically designed to showcase the client’s personal collection of Hawaiian artifacts. This feature not only serves as a focal point but also connects the home to the cultural narrative of Hawaii, celebrating its history and the legacy of Charles Dickey, a pivotal figure in the architectural landscape of the territory.
