The Contemporary Barn project in New Marlborough, MA, reimagines traditional barn aesthetics through a modern lens, creating a unique living space that harmonizes with its hillside surroundings. Retaining only a portion of the original foundation, the design opens the lower level to embrace the concept of a mill barn, characterized by a simple yet striking gable form. This architectural choice allows for a thoughtful interplay of materials and details, reminiscent of a Bento Box filled with delightful surprises. The exterior showcases charcoal-colored cement panel siding, meticulously cut and stacked to evoke a barn-like scale that feels both contemporary and timeless. This choice of material not only enhances the visual appeal but also ensures durability and low maintenance. The entry porch and living area are distinguished by cedar clapboards, adding warmth and texture while creating a sense of intrigue akin to a puzzle box. Complementing the overall design, the unadorned metal roof and cupola pay homage to traditional mill-barn structures, seamlessly blending the old with the new. Inside, the focal point of the home is the masonry hearth, an impressive feature that combines various types of stone in a cohesive design.
