The Open Kitchen Design project in Buffalo, NY, transformed a dated 1970s raised ranch kitchen into an elegant and functional space that embodies contemporary living. Initiated in 2015, this renovation, with a cost range of $25,001 to $50,000, focused on creating an open-concept kitchen that seamlessly merges with adjacent living areas. The original layout, while bright, confined the dining room and limited the desired functionality of the kitchen, necessitating a complete redesign. Working closely with the homeowners, Joe and Tim from THI Co. devised a plan to relocate the kitchen to one exterior wall, allowing for the inclusion of a spacious island designed for both cooking and entertaining. This bold move required the removal of the original windows, placing an emphasis on an unobstructed floor plan to maximize natural light. The design challenges included opening up the dining room wall, eliminating a dividing half wall that separated the family room, and widening doorways to create a fluid connection with the great room. The removal of soffits and installation of consistent prefinished 3/4 oak hardwood flooring throughout the space further unified the design. The cabinetry, chosen for its clean lines, features Kemper Echo cabinetry complemented by Jeffrey Alexander stainless bar pulls, while the Cambria Quartz Torquay countertops provide a durable and stylish surface. A Blanco Anthracite undermount Silgranite sink paired with a Moen nickel faucet adds both functionality and elegance. The kitchen is equipped with high-quality appliances, including a Samsung French door refrigerator, a Samsung slide-in gas range, a Whirlpool wall oven/microwave combination, and a Bosch 500 series dishwasher, ensuring that the kitchen is not only beautiful but also highly functional. The final outcome is a stunning blend of simple elegance and practical design, with the kitchen offering the efficiency of a galley layout while providing the spacious feel of an open kitchen.
