The Squaw project in Glenbrook, NV, transformed a dated 1970s condominium into a modern and inviting living space, exemplifying the beauty of transitional design. Working closely with the owner, SSB identified the inherent strengths of the original layout while addressing its shortcomings. The kitchen, once a cul-de-sac enclosed by dark cabinets and oppressive upper storage that created a boxed-in feeling, was reimagined to enhance flow and accessibility. By reversing the layout and eliminating the hanging upper cabinets, the kitchen was opened up, allowing for a more spacious and airy environment. To maximize storage without compromising on style, the cabinetry was meticulously designed. Despite a smaller overall footprint, the new cabinets increased both utility and storage capacity, demonstrating that thoughtful design can elevate functionality. The owner selected a pearl white finish for the cabinets, a choice that not only brightened the space but also introduced a fresh, contemporary feel that harmonizes beautifully with the transitional aesthetic. Central to the living area was a heavy cultured stone fireplace that dominated the space and absorbed much of the available light. The redesign strategically downplayed this feature, allowing for a more balanced distribution of light throughout the room. Modern LED fixtures were incorporated throughout, significantly enhancing the illumination and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The outcome of the Squaw project is a stunning blend of contemporary comfort and timeless design, where each element works in concert to create a cohesive living space. The transformation showcases how careful planning, selection of materials, and craftsmanship can turn a dated interior into a vibrant home, perfect for entertaining or relaxing.
