The West Side Kitchen project marked a significant transformation of a dated kitchen space within a charming 1930’s colonial home in Ann Arbor, MI. The renovation was initiated to replace a poorly executed remodel from the 1980s that had disrupted the flow of the kitchen area. The owners sought a fresh, contemporary design, moving away from the outdated white cabinetry to embrace grey recessed panel cabinets complemented by elegant white countertops. This choice not only modernizes the kitchen but also enhances its overall aesthetic appeal. A critical aspect of the renovation involved the elimination of a constricting hallway, which allowed for the introduction of a generous island at the center of the kitchen. This strategic change maximized the available space and significantly increased the influx of natural light from the south-facing windows, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. The kitchen’s design also features unique patterned glass doors on the cabinetry, which obscure the view of the contents while adding a layer of texture and visual interest to the overall dec. The backsplash consists of porcelain marble-look subway tiles, providing a clean and sophisticated backdrop that ties the elements of the kitchen together.
