Design Description: Nan's Experimental Water Wise Mediterranean Garden Located in Del Mar Heights, 'Nan's Experimental Water Wise Mediterranean Garden’ is a beautiful designed by Plant Soup, Inc. This garden has been a mix of beauty based on the Mediterranean style and sustainability using drought resistant plants and other environmentally friendly materials that flourish in the great California sun. From the beginning we were tasked with taking a traditional lawn and converting it into a water efficient garden. The design employs a variety of native plants including lavender, rosemary, and other succulents that not only grow well in arid contexts, but also attract desirable local pollinators. The garden uses permeable pavers to create pathways and help manage rainwater allowing it to permeate the soil to reduce runoff and allow some groundwater recharge. Designing the garden with terraced planting beds and seating areas makes it flow very nicely. High quality locally sourced stone was used to facilitate the raised beds providing some varying level of texture and structure but also longevity. The addition of a drip irrigation system further enhancing efficiency by delivering only to the roots and central cores of the plants minimizing wasted watering. Ultimately we landed on a landscape that meets Nan's expectations of a water wise garden while providing an example for others in the community. Nan is pleased with having a calming external retreat with a Mediterranean garden aesthetic that incorporates and educates through sustainability. Solving this property enhancement will increase property values and enhance water conservation behaviors, making this space truly special to a coastal neighborhood in Northern San Diego County.
