About This Project

The Pineland Commons building project in Portland, Maine, stands as a testament to creativity and skilled craftsmanship within the realm of commercial flooring. Initially slated for a straightforward replacement of old marmoleum with standard ceramic tile, the project took an inspiring turn upon discovering a unique feature in the existing flooring: a compass rose design intricately crafted from marmoleum. This serendipitous find ignited a passion for design and led to an exciting opportunity for revitalization, as the owner's representative inquired whether we could replicate this distinctive motif using the new materials. Embracing the challenge, we set about designing a stunning compass rose, measuring 16 feet in diameter, with an outer ring extending to 22 feet. This ambitious undertaking required meticulous planning and precise execution, with the entire layout fabricated on-site to ensure accuracy and alignment. Continuous coursing throughout the design was carefully maintained, with the exception of the diagonal points, allowing the eye to follow the elegant flow of the installation seamlessly. To enhance the visual impact of the compass rose while minimizing the appearance of grout lines, we opted for two different colors of epoxy grout. This thoughtful choice not only brought depth to the design but also showcased the craftsmanship involved in the intricate detailing of the compass rose. The final result is a breathtaking feature that transforms the space, elevating it beyond the ordinary into a realm of artistic expression. This project is not only a functional flooring solution but also a captivating focal point that invites admiration from all who enter the Pineland Commons building. The successful collaboration of design, material selection, and skilled installation culminated in a project that is not just about utility, but rather a celebration of artistry in commercial spaces. With its unique character and visual appeal, this project stands out as one of our favorites, proving that commercial flooring can indeed tell a story.
