The Hill Kitchen is a stunning embodiment of craftsmanship and design, blending rustic charm with contemporary functionality. Located in the picturesque Leipers Fork, TN, this kitchen was born out of a serendipitous collaboration between Kurt and his client, who sought a unique space to reflect her taste after parting ways with her previous cabinet maker. The project, which marked Kurt's inaugural kitchen endeavor 17 years ago, showcases the meticulous attention to detail and innovative design that have become his hallmarks. Constructed from 170-year-old reclaimed barnwood, the cabinetry features both finger and dovetail joints, offering not only durability but also an authentic, rustic aesthetic. The upper cabinets present an appealing mix of glass front doors and open shelving, inviting the display of cherished dishware and decorative items. The lower cabinets, painted a vibrant red with a sophisticated black glaze, provide a striking contrast to the classic white subway tile backsplash, creating a balanced and inviting atmosphere. The centerpiece of the kitchen is the island, featuring a gustavian faux finish complemented by a maple butcher block countertop, seamlessly merging tradition with practicality. The multi-colored hutch, with its tongue and groove back and maple top, adds a distinctive touch, enhanced by the artistic red diamond shapes and robust block legs that ground the design. An open letterbox hung above the desk not only serves a functional purpose but also adds to the kitchen’s character, making it a cozy nook for daily activities. The overall ambiance is completed by the white beadboard ceiling and medium-stained pine floors, which bring warmth and cohesion to the space. This kitchen is more than just a cooking area; it is a thoughtfully curated environment that feels as if it was designed around the client’s collection of dishes and artifacts.
