The Ross Terraced Vegetable Garden is a remarkable transformation of a steeply sloped property in Ross, CA, designed to integrate a vegetable garden, orchard, chicken coop, and tortoise habitat within a challenging landscape. The original site was limited due to the existing pool, lawn, and patio areas occupying all accessible sunny spots, presenting a unique challenge for our team. To optimize the available space, we designed a series of terraced beds that elegantly follow the natural contours of the slope, complemented by switchback paths that facilitate both accessibility and aesthetic appeal. Our design choices were meticulously crafted to harmonize with the existing elements of the property. The terraced beds were constructed to mirror the ledgestone rock walls, bluestone caps, and granite-lined paths that characterize the surrounding landscape, ensuring a seamless integration of style. The craftsmanship involved not only practical construction techniques but also a keen eye for detail, resulting in a garden that is both functional and visually stunning. Incorporating an accessible pathway was a key feature of this project, allowing wheelchair and delivery access from the driveway to the pool and patio levels. This thoughtful addition ensures that the garden is inclusive and usable for all visitors, enhancing the overall experience of the property. To promote biodiversity and attract beneficial insects and pollinators, we interplanted the terraced beds with a variety of native plants, creating a vibrant ecosystem that supports both flora and fauna. The outcome of the Ross Terraced Vegetable Garden is a beautifully designed and functional space that not only meets the clients' needs for food production and animal habitats but also enhances the beauty of their property.
