About This Project

In 2016, the "Small Space Big Design" project transformed an 800 square foot basement, which was home to one tenant and her two dogs and four cats. Originally, the space felt cramped and dark, primarily due to the clutter and inefficient use of furnishings. The project aimed to revitalize this area, creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment within a modest budget of less than $1,000. The initial layout featured two oversized dressers that served as makeshift barriers between the bedroom and the remainder of the living space. This arrangement not only obstructed the flow of the room but also relegated the bed to a corner, making it difficult for the homeowner to access and maintain. The first step in the redesign process involved a significant decluttering effort. The homeowner meticulously sorted through her belongings, ultimately reducing her storage needs to just one dresser. This decision was pivotal in reclaiming valuable floor space. With the excess furniture removed, the design team focused on enhancing the room’s natural light and creating a more open layout. Strategic placement of mirrors and light-colored décor contributed to a brighter atmosphere, making the space feel more expansive. The bed was repositioned to a more accessible location, allowing it to pull out from the wall, simplifying the daily routine of making the bed. The craftsmanship displayed in the project was evident through the careful selection of materials and finishes that complemented the traditional aesthetic of the home. The final outcome was a harmonious blend of functionality and style, demonstrating how a small space can be transformed into a welcoming and efficient living area.
