#SantaAna,California Work Summary: Native Plant Garden This garden is planted in sandy soil, located in Santa Ana, where the median precipitation is 12 inches, and is primarily watered with greywater, so the plants to be chosen should be from a region with the same type of soil (sandy soil) and precipitation type. The 'Native Plant Landscape in Santa Ana' (Nelson and co, 2019) from Back to Natives This demonstrates how we can improve the aesthetics of the property, while working toward more sustainable landscaping practices. A wide variety of native plants were used on the , selected for suitability to local climate and low water use. This included colorful California poppies, fragrant sage, and hardy manzanita planted to create a balanced and varied eco-community. By having the use of organic mulch and amended soil brought in from a local farm surrounding plant health, soil vitality was also thriving. One of the biggest challenges we faced was all the existing hardscape that would limit water movement and therefore plant growth. Permeable pavements and raingarden were integrated into the redesigned drainage system to allow easy management of percolating water while creating a better, living landscape. Not only did this solve the drainage problems but it enhanced the overall appearance, creating inviting areas for native fauna and for people. The end product was a colorful, low maintenance garden that buzzed with life which the client and local community found joy in. Apart from saving a huge quantity of water, the native plant landscape created a home for many local pollinators and wildlife. It is amazing how the practices we stand by can be presented in our landscapes, creating beautiful, user- and family-friendly landscapes that are functional, holistic, and sustainable landscapes through what Back to Natives believes in.
