San Francis Woods by Garden Fantasia Located in the center of San Francisco, the 'San Francisco Woods' is a creation of Garden Fantasia. The new landscaping completely reshaped an ordinary city lot into a serene green space which marries us with nature. The core of the design was to implement a multi-level garden with a diverse assortment of native Californian plants that would not only support the local ecosystem but also provide year-round color and texture. The team chose the drought-resistant species, including California poppies and manzanitas, with care to balance sustainability with low maintenance. Walkways created with permeable pavers not only create an attractive footing, they allow for proper drainage, meeting the demands of stormwater runoff unique to the city. Among the remaining unique characteristics is a custom-built wooden bridge deck of sustainably grown redwood lumber. This raised area is provides stand out views of the garden, and also doubles as an ideal place to enjoy an outdoor gathering. The team finished it with weatherproofing so the deck could survive Portland's fickle climate. Garden Fantasia also struggled with a hillside yard. In a unique way, the team stabilized the hillside with terracing, using locally sourced stone with a natural appearance, creating areas for walking and sitting and contributing to a clear garden character to explore. Local stone was used which complemented the landscape almost seamlessly, thus respecting the natural landscape and creating an overall pleasing aesthetic. It has been nothing short of stunning the outcome of the San Francis Woods that runs from spit point to the coastal edge of the South Head. The integration of hardscape and softscape dances with one another to create a home that inspires serenity and beckons wildlife into the garden. Clients said they loved how the space changed their outdoor experience, creating a beautiful backdrop for family gatherings and quiet evenings.
