About This Project

North Hillsdale Okerstrom Lang Ltd Landscape Architects is pleased to present the North Hillsdale , a turned landscaping that captures the natural charm of the Berkshires. Located in Hillsdale, NY, the aims to enhance the exterior of the home while honoring the native ecology. The team faced challenges concerning unstable slope, soil moisture, and soil quality. A full grading plan was established to address drainage and provide a series of inviting terraces that fit into the landscape, with the grading plan also bringing in-fill material closer to the home. Taking into consideration the climate, we chose native plants for durability and low-maintenance. The plant palette ranged from lush perennials and ornamental grasses to locally sourced stone pathways and retaining walls. The combination of plants and hardscapes provided continuity through form and material from the home. A highlight of the North Hillsdale is our custom fire pit area, partially encased in natural boulders, and surrounded by low-maintenance landscaping. The area provides a great space for gathering outside and fits nicely on the slope of the garden. We also incorporated an assortment of flowering shrubs and trees for a continuous display of bloom throughout the seasons and into winter. Through attention to detail, we have not only created a beautiful landscape but also added significant value to the property. The client formed a strong emotional connection not only to the landscaping but also to the hardscape plant elements of the scheme. The client expressed their delight with the integration of the hardscape plant aspects that we achieved in relation to the existing topography. The North Hillsdale demonstrates Okerstrom Lang Ltd's commitment to quality craftsmanship and innovative design, worthy of adding to our portfolio both in Columbia county and beyond.
