The front yard was mostly unused, with a spotted grassy expanse and few plants. Our design included colorful native plants, a custom stone pathway and seating area to greet and welcome visitors and provide a lively entrance to the home. We chose materials that not only matched well with the architecture of the home, but also were sustainable to the wide variety of weather in Colorado. We resolved upon natural stone pavers to add a little character and personality to the path while also ensuring that the surface remained non-slipping. We included ornamental grasses and perennial flowers that flower throughout the seasons to provide habitat for local pollinators and textural variation and layering for ecological plant community development. This year we tackled another challenge with the sloping topography of the yard. We designed a tiered planting bed to solve the drainage problem while adding levels of interest. Local stone for retaining walls allows the landscape and the built work to feel like one, creating stability and place. What I ended up with was a striking front garden that turned the clients home into a million dollar domain. It features colorful flowers, green foliage and a cozy sitting area that is a beautiful yet functional space.
