About This Project

The Porch Addition project, undertaken by J. Francis Company, LLC, transformed a long-abandoned structure into a stunning and functional space that beautifully complements the Queen Anne style of the home. Located in Pittsburgh’s North Side, this project was initiated by Deb Mortillaro and Mike Gonze, owners of the renowned Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners. They envisioned a porch that would serve as an inviting area for entertaining guests and hosting wine tasting events, all while respecting the historical integrity of their residence. The design process involved meticulous planning and collaboration with Maynes & Associates, Architects, addressing the unique challenges posed by the original structure. Key design features included the innovative reuse of the original porch footers, ensuring a seamless integration with the existing architecture. The flooring was crafted from rich mahogany tongue and groove planks, which not only add warmth but also enhance the overall aesthetic of the space. A careful balance between compliance and visual appeal was achieved with a custom railing system that mirrors the original design. The top rail, made from clear-coated Cyprus, adds a modern touch while maintaining historical accuracy. The original porch columns were replaced with elegant new columns that elevate the overall look, while the reproduction of the curved corner, complete with a custom-built handrail, adds a unique charm to the design. The final outcome is a breathtaking wrap-around porch that perfectly blends functionality with aesthetics. The harmonious combination of the red mahogany floor, Cyprus handrail, and stained bead board ceiling creates an atmosphere that is both inviting and luxurious. This newly completed porch not only enhances the home's exterior but also provides a splendid space for entertaining, much to the delight of their eagerly awaiting friends and clients. The craftsmanship and attention to detail have resulted in a stunning addition that will be cherished for years to come.
