Nestled in a serene cul-de-sac near downtown San Luis Obispo, the Clausen Residence stands as a testament to contemporary craftsman design, seamlessly integrating modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship. Spanning 4,257 square feet, this thoughtfully designed home features four spacious bedrooms, a dedicated photo studio, and three full bathrooms alongside a half bath, making it ideal for both family living and creative pursuits. The unique challenges of this project were transformed into opportunities for innovative design. The buildable area was constrained due to nearly half of the property being designated as a biological open space easement, established to preserve the creek that meanders behind the lot. This limitation, coupled with the steep topography, inspired a distinctive stair-stepped three-story floor plan that not only maximizes space but also enhances the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. To comply with stringent height restrictions imposed by local regulations, the garage was ingeniously placed into the hillside, allowing the main living areas to sit gracefully above. This strategic decision not only optimizes the site’s elevation but also creates a natural flow throughout the home. The main level hosts an expansive great room that opens to a vast deck, designed for year-round outdoor entertaining with built-in barbecue facilities, a fireplace, and heaters that extend the usability of the space into the cooler months. The uppermost floor is dedicated entirely to the luxurious master suite, offering a tranquil retreat with picturesque views of the backyard and the natural beauty beyond. Each detail of the home, from the lap siding to the intricate craftsman details, reflects a commitment to quality and aesthetics.
