Giant Slumber Rainforest Retreat - Belize

The Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge in Belize features an impressive 39 ½ foot wide by 11 ½ foot projection, designed as an attached three-span (two post) waterproof retractable dining area patio cover system, complete with front water drainage. This innovative structure allows rainwater to flow through optional downpipes, directing it efficiently off the third-story deck. Constructed using a continuous piece of high-quality fabric and a single motor, the system is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The frame and guides are crafted entirely from non-rusting aluminum, ensuring durability in the coastal environment. The powder-coated finish, in RAL 1013 Ivory, complements the natural surroundings, while the stainless steel components, made from Inox (470LI and 316), provide exceptional corrosion resistance, meeting stringent European salt spray standards. The specified fabric, Ferrari 302 Precontraint Color Salmone, is a waterproof PVC material that is self-extinguishing, ensuring safety without compromising on utility. With a Beaufort wind load rating of Scale 8, capable of withstanding winds up to 46 mph, the retractable cover is designed to endure the coastal breezes. An additional brown hood with end caps prevents the accumulation of rainwater, leaves, and debris when not in use, enhancing both maintenance and longevity. The system is conveniently controlled via a Somfy remote, adding to the user-friendly design. The purpose of this project was to create an elegant dining space that could be utilized year-round without obstructing the breathtaking views of the Belize mountains. With the retractable cover system, guests can now enjoy their meals while being sheltered from sun, glare, and heavy rain. The lodge's unique location along the Sibun River basin, surrounded by the majestic Maya Mountains, provides an idyllic setting for visitors. The outcome has delighted the client, allowing for an expanded use of the large deck area, thus enhancing the overall guest experience at the renowned Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge. All project requirements were met on time and within budget, showcasing a successful collaboration between design and execution.
