This renovation of a Southwest contemporary residence has garnered an ALCA Judges Award, underscoring its innovative approach to integrating native ecology with modern aesthetics. The design strategically retains existing Sonoran desert plant materials, such as ironwood trees and saguaros, which provide a stunning natural backdrop for the newly introduced native plantings. These selections are carefully chosen to enhance the landscape's visual interest, color, and texture throughout the year. The plantings are thoughtfully arranged to frame selected artworks within the landscape, ensuring that each piece is displayed to its utmost advantage while creating a cohesive dialogue between the art and the natural environment. The landscape also serves as a sanctuary for local pollinators, including hummingbirds, butterflies, and moths, promoting biodiversity and ecological health. In addition to the vibrant plantings, the project features an outdoor kitchen and fire pit, designed to create inviting spaces for relaxation and entertainment. The use of natural granite and stainless steel in the outdoor kitchen not only enhances functionality but also complements the desert surroundings and the artwork, striking a beautiful balance between man-made and nature. Sustainability is a core principle of the design, with berms and swales incorporated to passively harvest rainfall, ensuring that water is efficiently utilized within the landscape.
