Monastic Housing Development Strategy

The Monastery Housing Master Plan in Hidden Valley Lake, California, represents a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to creating a welcoming and functional living environment for the Eastern Orthodox community. Initiated in 2017, this project encompasses the master planning and renovation of existing facilities to enhance housing options and support amenities for the monastery's residents. The design emphasizes the integration of traditional architectural elements with contemporary needs, ensuring that the aesthetics resonate with the monastery's spiritual and cultural values. Central to the project is the renovation study of the existing housing, where our team focused on re-purposing the upper levels to provide additional living space. By incorporating dormers into the design, we effectively increased the overall second-floor area, allowing for a more spacious and comfortable living environment while maintaining the original farmhouse character. This strategic addition not only enhances the functionality of the space but also provides ample natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The materials selected for the renovation reflect a commitment to sustainability and durability, ensuring that the housing remains resilient against the elements while embodying the rustic charm of the surrounding landscape. High-quality timber, energy-efficient windows, and traditional roofing materials were carefully chosen to harmonize with the existing structures, offering a seamless blend of old and new.
