About This Project

The Overhill shading device project addresses the need for a comfortable and functional outdoor living space, specifically designed for a south-facing patio in Allentown, PA. This area was previously rendered unusable during the sweltering summer months due to excessive heat and direct sunlight. To enhance the client’s experience, our team devised a sophisticated solution that combines both aesthetics and practicality. The design incorporates four freestanding columns, constructed from durable materials that ensure longevity and stability. These columns serve as the foundation for an innovative system of stainless steel cables, which can be configured in various layouts to provide flexible shading options. The integration of anchor points on the underside of the home's overhanging roof further enhances the structural integrity and versatility of the shading system. This clever use of existing architecture not only maximizes the area’s usability but also maintains the home's visual charm. To achieve the desired shade effect, the design allows for weaving fabric through the cables or attaching sun sails, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. This approach provides substantial relief from the sun while ensuring minimal visual distraction, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain in focus. The columns are intentionally designed to reflect the detailing found in Usonian-style architecture, ensuring that they harmonize with the home’s aesthetic and blend seamlessly into the natural setting when devoid of fabric.
