About This Project

Pivot Pad is a thoughtfully designed 1000 square foot residence located in the scenic landscape of Boerne, TX, where functionality meets sustainability. The client’s vision of "living small" and minimizing her carbon footprint led us to explore innovative solutions that aligned with her budget constraints. After evaluating various prefab options, we determined that a bespoke design and on-site construction would ultimately be more cost-effective while fulfilling her desires for a compact yet stylish home. The architectural layout emphasizes a strong circulation axis, articulated by a boardwalk that seamlessly connects the various elements of the property. This pathway organizes guest parking at one end, guiding visitors through a carport and into a serene Zen courtyard before reaching the front do. Inside, the design continues to promote a sense of flow and openness, leading through the living spaces and out to a backyard that culminates in a stunning wood deck, cantilevered over a limestone bluff with breathtaking views of the creek and the adjacent nature preserve. The materials selected for Pivot Pad reflect a commitment to both aesthetics and practicality. Sealed concrete floors throughout the home provide durability and ease of maintenance, while the kitchen features IKEA cabinetry, ensuring a modern and efficient cooking environment without exceeding budgetary limits. The exterior showcases corrugated Galvalume metal, lending the house an industrial charm that harmonizes beautifully with its natural surroundings. A striking feature of the entryway is a 400-pound weathered steel pivot door, ingeniously designed to operate on ball bearings, allowing effortless movement with just a finger. This heavy yet elegantly crafted door, complemented by a glass transom that bathes the entry space in natural light, sets a welcoming tone for the entire residence. The culmination of these design choices and craftsmanship results in a home that not only meets the client’s aspirations but also stands as a testament to sustainable living, merging comfort with environmental consciousness.
