Hirsohn Hillside • 2018 Verne Pershing, The Art of Gardening As part of the beautiful woods and landscape scenery of El Dorado County, the Hirsohn Hillside is another application of transforming an outdoor area into a resting place. This 2018 was a true labor of love to marry the beauty of the hillside with the owner's wish for a relaxing landscape. The design consisted of a careful arrangement of native plants that thrive in our local climate and require very little maintenance, a sustainable landscape. Incorporating locally-sourced rock paths and terraced retaining walls provided functional areas that follow the natural contours of the hillside. The use of drought-tolerant materials such as gravel and mulch completed the aesthetic while conserving our natural resource. One of the challenges of the property was the steep slope, requiring us to be creative in soil stabilization and erosion prevention. Our talented staff incorporated a series of bioengineering including plant installs and erosion control blankets that strategically secured the hillside while providing a lush, green habitat. The end result was a spectacular landscape that captured the clients and their guest’s attention. The winding paths meander to quiet seating areas, flower beds, and a grand vista of the surrounding hills. Most importantly, the client expressed their enjoyment. They believe the new landscape increased their property value and enhanced their outdoor living space.
