The Stair as Art project involved a transformative renovation that replaced a dated and unsafe staircase in a 1970s home in Kansas City, MO, with a stunning new curved staircase that has become a central design element in the living space. The existing staircase, while unique, had not aged gracefully and did not align with the eclectic yet contemporary style of the new homeowners. Our goal was to create a focal point that harmonized with their aesthetic while enhancing the overall safety and functionality of the staircase. To achieve this vision, we opted for a modern design that features open risers and glass railings topped with a sleek wood cap. This combination not only ensures safety but also maintains a sense of transparency and lightness, effectively minimizing visual disruption to the adjacent finishes in the space. The curved shape of the new staircase provides a striking contrast to the angular features of the home, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to the otherwise simple living room.
