Rustic granite boulders were also incorporated into the slopes, adding depth and stability, so the terrace would be both functional and attractive. The native plantings were chosen to increase the native beauty of the terrace while still bringing colour and seasonal interest, and the ultimate in sustainability from a local biodiversity perspective. The property was on a steep incline, so one of the biggest challenges was coming up with measures to build safe and accessible tiers among the slopes. From building a retaining wall system that not only solved the water drainage problem but also creates a striking wall to back the terrace, significant work and thought went into the invitation to the homeowner to enjoy their outdoor patio. These practices helped to manage water within the landscape in such a way as to reduce soil erosion and help preserve the landscape itself, allowing the indigenous landscape to persist (Davis et al. 2015). The end product is an incredible outdoor sanctuary with space for entertaining and nooks for peaceful reflection. Soft landscape lighting was also placed to accentuate the terrace's unique elements creating a magical evening tone.
