About This Project

The Satank Schoolhouse Addition masterfully blends historical charm with modern functionality, resulting in a seamless expansion of a cherished landmark in the Town of Cooperton, now known as Satank. Originally constructed in 1893, this historic building has been transformed into a welcoming single-family home through thoughtful renovations that honor its rich past. The homeowners envisioned an attached apartment designed for accommodating family members during extended stays, as well as serving as a versatile studio rental. In crafting the addition, our design team focused on creating an integrated structure that appears as if it has always belonged to the original schoolhouse. The roof lines were meticulously aligned with a long, graceful hip covered in sleek corrugated metal, providing a contemporary twist that complements the building’s vintage aesthetic. To maintain the integrity of the original architecture, we salvaged the brick removed during construction and skillfully reused it to unify the new mudroom with the historical elements of the home. The studio apartment is thoughtfully designed to maximize comfort and functionality. It features bright and airy living spaces that open onto a small patio to the south, inviting natural light and creating a serene outdoor retreat. The layout includes a quiet bedroom positioned at the back, ensuring a peaceful escape, while the entryway echoes the charm of the main porch, seamlessly connecting the old with the new. This project, initiated in 2017, showcases exceptional craftsmanship and a deep respect for the building's historical significance. The result is not only a stunning addition to the Satank community but also a functional space that enhances the homeowners' lifestyle. The Satank Schoolhouse Addition stands as a testament to the harmonious balance between preservation and innovation, inviting future generations to cherish this unique blend of history and modern living.
