About This Project

The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts stands as a transformative space in Omaha, Nebraska, redefining the relationship between art and community engagement. Collaborating closely with FACT (Fabrication And Construction Team), our student-staffed design-build lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, we undertook a comprehensive design initiative that transcends conventional notions of gallery spaces. Rather than merely serving as a static repository for artistic works, the Bemis Center has been conceptualized as a dynamic, transmutable landscape that fosters public discourse and artistic expression. Our design approach centers around the concept of the Bemis Center as a "social condenser," aligning with the institution's mission to facilitate open dialogue about art and civic involvement. The project encompasses a diverse program that includes public galleries, artist workspaces, artist-designed gardens, and inviting public outdoor areas, all strategically situated within the revitalized former warehouse district. These elements combine to create an integrated environment where art can flourish alongside community interaction. The architectural framework is characterized by thoughtful design choices and high-quality materials that reflect both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Natural materials blend seamlessly with modern finishes, ensuring that each space maintains a unique identity while contributing to the overall harmony of the center.
