About This Project

The Allure of the Details project in Edmond, OK, embarked on a transformative journey to enhance both the style and functionality of a kitchen, ensuring accessibility for wheelchair users without compromising aesthetic appeal. Originally, the kitchen was burdened with an oversized island that disrupted flow, a refrigerator obstructing a primary doorway, and a high bar that excluded wheelchair access. Our clients envisioned a space that welcomed everyone, fostering interaction and ease of use. To achieve this, we opted for a streamlined open floor plan that introduced a galley kitchen layout. The design cleverly incorporated a peninsula that opens to the family den, allowing for a generous five-foot walkway. This peninsula features a drop-down, table-height countertop, creating an inclusive workstation accessible to all family members, whether seated in a wheelchair or standing. We further enhanced functionality by lowering the cooking area, installing an induction cooktop with ample knee space underneath, which facilitates comfortable cooking for all. An apron front sink was selected to improve reachability, paired with an articulating faucet that ensures unrestricted access. Additionally, we thoughtfully positioned the ovens and microwave at accessible heights, enhancing usability for wheelchair users. The previous refrigerator, which once impeded movement, was replaced with a pull-out pantry, allowing easy access to dry goods for cooks of all heights. Every detail of the kitchen was meticulously considered to ensure an inviting environment for all occupants, regardless of mobility challenges. This project not only redefined the space but also reinforced the importance of thoughtful design in everyday living. The result is a beautifully crafted kitchen that exemplifies the philosophy of "less is more," providing a functional yet stylish haven for family gatherings and culinary adventures.
