About This Project

The Family Friendly Kitchen project transformed a previously dark and dysfunctional space into a bright, inviting, and highly functional area for family gatherings and culinary creativity. Located in White Bear Lake, MN, this project was initiated in 2018 after the homeowners recognized that the old kitchen, flanked by stubby peninsulas, created an unwelcoming choke point that hampered traffic flow and usability. Wise Design took on the challenge by strategically moving the dining room wall closer, effectively eliminating awkward access from the living room and creating a seamless transition between spaces. This thoughtful modification not only improved the overall layout but also enhanced the connection between the cooking and dining areas, culminating in a harmonious flow that is both practical and visually appealing. The homeowners, an outdoorsy couple, opted for timeless natural maple cabinets that bring warmth and character to the kitchen. Complementing these cabinets, solid quartzite stone countertops provide durability and elegance, while an easy-to-clean laser-cut, one-piece stainless steel backsplash adds a contemporary touch and reflects light beautifully, further enhancing the kitchen’s brightness. The incorporation of dimmable LED ceiling cans and under-cabinet lighting ensures that the workspace is well-lit and adaptable to various activities, from meal prep to entertaining guests. Accessibility was a key consideration in the design, with ample storage solutions incorporated throughout to keep the kitchen organized and efficient. Special features, such as north shore stone hutch knobs, add a unique character to the cabinetry, while a sunroom pass-thru sill crafted from reclaimed white pine wood—sourced from the owner’s childhood home—infuses the space with nostalgic charm. The result is a kitchen that not only flows effortlessly but also serves as a central hub for family life, blending functionality with style in a way that truly reflects the homeowners' lifestyle and preferences.
