Showcase: Mid-Century Upgrade, Seattle Located in the popular setting of Seattle, The 'Mid-Century Upgrade' , completed by Mark S. Garff, Landscape Architect, is an impressive example of mid-century design with a modern feel. Designed for the mixed communities of Bainbridge Island, Ballard, and more, this compliments the area through its use of local materials and sustainability. Construction started with the disassembly of worn-out plantings and hardscape cluttering the site. In their place, a selection of native plants was introduced to increase biodiversity and be low maintenance. The outdoor space can accommodate entertaining and relaxing, centered around a fire pit and custom-built seating, and a patio of reclaimed slate. One challenge was the slope of the site, one that was easily addressed with terraced gardens that create both functional plantings and visual interest. Further emphasizing the sustainability choice was a rain garden to capture the runoff and promote native plants. The end result is a unified outdoor space that fully attempts the client’s wish but respects the natural character of the landscape. Not only did the restrain and renew the landscape, but it is more appealing from the curb, and the client is extremely happy with their new outdoor experience. The Mid-Century Upgrade is proof of Mark S. Garff's commitment to quality work and creative landscape design successfully merged in one , and one of the best in the region.
