The Rickard project involved a comprehensive renovation of a charming home built in the 1950s, located in the picturesque town of Richmond, Massachusetts. As the general contractor, Berkshire Home Pros undertook the significant task of removing a structural wall that formerly housed a pantry, thereby enhancing the kitchen's spatial dynamics and overall functionality. This decision not only opened up the kitchen area but also aligned with contemporary design preferences for open-concept living spaces. Given the age of the home, we adhered strictly to EPA regulations regarding lead-safe renovations, ensuring the safety and health of the residents throughout the construction process. The removal of the wall necessitated the installation of a new supporting beam, which presented a unique challenge. The beam had to be taller than the existing second-floor joists to accommodate structural integrity, yet we aimed to maintain the aesthetic appeal of the home’s original design. To address this, we crafted a faux beam that was meticulously designed to replicate the look of hand-hewn timber, reminiscent of the rustic charm prevalent in traditional farmhouse architecture. This design choice not only provided the necessary support but also integrated beautifully with the home’s overall aesthetic, enhancing its character while blending seamlessly with the surrounding elements.
