About This Project

Organic Gardens by More Than Gardens In Long Island, More Than Gardens undertook the transformation of an unproductive yard into an incredible space focused on sustainability and natural beauty with the 'Organic Gardens' . With a wide-ranging clientele in Baldwin, Bayside, and elsewhere, we spent time developing this landscape with native plants, organic soil amendments, and responsibly obtained materials, with an eye toward enhancing the ecosystem while maintaining a lush environment. The design included a range of raised vegetable beds made from reclaimed cedar that combined both function and beauty. The drip irrigation system was introduced to conserve water and promote healthy growth, as the uneven climate of the local area complicated the consistent watering of the space. A pollinator garden was also built containing several wildflower varieties of native species to attract beneficial insects, diversifying the garden even further. The work presented challenges as the existing topography needed to be addressed and the required a drainage system. Grading and placing permeable pathways facilitated the necessary drainage sustainably, addressing both issues. The walkways were built with stone sourced locally from the neighbor’s property, maintaining a natural flow through the garden while using fewer resources. At completion, the organic garden was flourishing and exceeded the client’s expectations. Vibrant vegetables, fragrant herbs, and dynamic flower beds established a beautiful and useful site for the family to enjoy for years. The improved landscape in their ``backyard eco-system`` has inspired neighboring families and clients, ultimately providing value to the community and demonstrating that sustainability and maintenance does not compromise beauty.
