About This Project

The Eckner Project in Cincinnati, OH, showcases a transformative home improvement initiative designed to enhance accessibility and comfort for a veteran living with ALS. Completed by the KBC Home Modification Division and funded through the VA, this project emphasizes thoughtful design choices and high-quality craftsmanship tailored to meet the specific needs of the homeowner and his family. At the heart of the project is a spacious rear composite deck, expertly crafted to be wheelchair accessible from the home. To facilitate this transition, we replaced an existing bedroom window with a new door featuring an ADA-compliant sill, ensuring seamless access to the maintenance-resistant composite deck, which is adorned with elegant aluminum railing. Additionally, a concrete ramp and sidewalk were installed to provide safe access to the front of the home, further enhancing mobility. Inside, the existing master bedroom suite underwent a comprehensive redesign to accommodate both current and future needs. The master bathroom was significantly expanded by incorporating the adjacent walk-in closet. This thoughtful modification allowed for the installation of state-of-the-art features, including a barrier-free shower, an ADA-compliant toilet, and a roll-under vanity sink designed for wheelchair access. These elements not only improve functionality but also create a welcoming and stylish bathroom environment. The choice of materials throughout the project reflects a commitment to durability and low maintenance, ensuring that the improvements will stand the test of time while providing a safe and comfortable living space. The result is a beautifully cohesive design that marries accessibility with modern aesthetics, ultimately delivering a home that empowers the veteran and his family to thrive.
