The "Before and After Mudroom" project transformed a charming 1920s cottage-style home located in Turlock, California, into a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space. This renovation addressed the unique challenges posed by the original layout, particularly the awkward angles leading to the backdo. The design team recognized these quirks as an opportunity for innovation and creativity, resulting in a custom-crafted entry that blends modern functionality with the home's historical charm. Key to the design was the extensive use of shiplap, which creates a seamless connection to the backdoor while enhancing the space's overall visual appeal. The bold 1x trim casing unifies the elements and adds a crisp finish, drawing the eye to the inviting entryway. To further enhance the openness of the area, the team removed a load-bearing wall that previously separated the mudroom from the kitchen. This strategic decision not only opened up the space but improved the flow and accessibility between two of the home’s most utilized areas. A 4x12 GluLam beam was expertly installed to support the exterior wall, ensuring structural integrity while maintaining an open and airy feel. In addition to the aesthetic improvements, the project also included the installation of a new pantry and windows, which have significantly increased the functionality of the space. The result is a modern mudroom that meets contemporary needs without compromising the character of the original cottage.
