About This Project

The Knight Residence stands as a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and a passion for historical preservation. When my wife and I acquired this house shortly after my graduation in architecture, it was in a state of disrepair, deemed a teardown by the Historic District Commission. However, a thorough inspection revealed that the structure retained its integrity with virtually no rot or significant damage, which inspired us to embark on a comprehensive renovation project. We stripped the entire home down to its essential 2x4 framework, allowing us to rebuild with a fresh perspective while honoring its historical roots. Every element within the Knight Residence reflects our commitment to authenticity and quality. We sourced original period doors and mantels from historic homes across North Carolina, ensuring that the character of the house was not only preserved but enhanced. The renovation involved the installation of new materials that harmonized with the salvaged pieces, creating an inviting atmosphere that resonates with the charm of the original architecture. The exterior features a durable 5v galvanized roof, which played a crucial role in protecting the house during an unforeseen incident when it suffered fire damage from a neighboring property. This roof was instrumental in preventing total destruction and allowed us to continue our work without losing sight of our vision. The culmination of our efforts resulted in a beautifully restored home that seamlessly blends modern comforts with historic elegance. The Knight Residence not only serves as a family abode but also as a showcase of sustainable practices and architectural integrity. Shortly after completion, the house gained recognition in Southern Living, highlighting the successful marriage of design and restoration. This project exemplifies our belief in the value of preserving history while creating spaces that enrich the lives of those who inhabit them.
