Contemporary Sustainable Home

The Modern Eco Residence in Belmont, NC, is a testament to innovative design harmonized with nature. Nestled on a picturesque lakefront lot, this project embodies a modern naturalistic vision focused on sustainability. The client's dedication to eco-friendly building practices was paramount, influencing every aspect of the design and construction process. The residence is intelligently positioned to leverage both passive and active solar energy, as well as the refreshing breezes from the lake, creating an optimal indoor/outdoor living experience that fosters a deep connection with the surrounding landscape. The unique pie-shaped lot presented various challenges, including a restricted buildable area due to a steep shoreline buffer and a powerline easement. Despite these constraints, the design team successfully crafted a compact yet spacious home of approximately 2,500 square feet, skillfully juxtaposing modern architectural lines with the organic forms of its setting. The design maximizes the stunning 180-degree lake views while prioritizing the preservation of heritage trees, ensuring that the home seamlessly integrates with its environment. Prior to construction, the shoreline buffer was revitalized by rewilding efforts that introduced wildflowers, perennials, clover, and meadow grasses, promoting a healthy ecosystem for local wildlife and insects. The residence features advanced self-sufficiency elements, including solar panels, hydroponic heated floors, and a wood stove, all aligning with the owner’s vision of sustainability. The choice of core ten steel as a predominant material allows the structure to weather naturally, developing a rusted patina that harmonizes with the earthy tones of the landscape. The outcome is a beautifully crafted home that not only meets the client's eco-friendly aspirations but also serves as a beacon of modern design, capturing the essence of lakeside living while respecting and enhancing the natural environment.
