The Malibu project represents a thoughtful rebuild and redesign of a three-bedroom home that was tragically lost in the Woolsey fire. Located in the picturesque setting of Malibu, CA, the project commenced in 2022, guided by a commitment to create a contemporary living space that adheres to stringent budget and regulatory constraints. Given the stipulation that the new home’s footprint could not exceed that of the original structure, our design team collaborated closely with the homeowners to maximize every inch of space while ensuring a visually stunning aesthetic. The design evolved into a contemporary floor plan characterized by high ceilings and an open layout, promoting a sense of spaciousness despite maintaining the original dimensions. A simple yet elegant sloping roof structure was introduced, starting low in the master bedroom and gradually elevating over the living and dining areas. This design choice not only enhances the architectural appeal but also allows for an abundance of natural light to filter through, creating a warm and inviting environment throughout the home. Central to the living and dining areas are high stacking glass doors that seamlessly connect the interior with the outside deck and existing pool area. This feature fosters an effortless indoor/outdoor Southern California lifestyle, perfect for entertaining or enjoying tranquil moments in the sun. The careful selection of materials and craftsmanship reflects a dedication to quality, with finishes and fixtures that complement the contemporary design while ensuring durability and longevity. The outcome of the Malibu project is a stunning home that stands as a testament to resilient design and innovative thinking. It successfully balances the need for compliance with regulations and budgetary constraints while delivering a space that feels expansive, bright, and inviting.
