The Mid-Century Makeover project transformed an already stunning mid-century modern home in St. Louis into an inviting and functional space ideal for family gatherings and entertainment. The original lanai, with its well-preserved screened-in room and elegant terrazzo floors, provided a solid foundation for this ambitious renovation. Recognizing the potential for increased usage, the homeowners envisioned a seamless integration between the main living area and the lanai, prompting the decision to remove the interior walls that previously divided these spaces. This strategic choice not only enhanced the flow of the home but also created an expansive environment perfect for movie nights and social gatherings. To modernize and protect the newly opened area, the outdated exterior screens were replaced with sleek, energy-efficient windows and screens, elevating the aesthetic while ensuring comfort year-round. The project also included the removal of old skylights, which were substituted with seven new, state-of-the-art skylights equipped with solar shades. This upgrade allows for optimal natural light control, enabling the family to enjoy bright, airy spaces while mitigating heat during the hot summer months. Craftsmanship played a crucial role in maintaining the architectural integrity of the home. The removal of interior doorways was executed with precision, incorporating structural beams and supports that preserved the open and airy feel of the redesigned layout. The flooring transition was carefully managed, with new wood seamlessly integrated to match the original terrazzo in areas where walls once stood. A standout feature of the renovation is the double-sided gas fireplace, which replaced the original single unit.
