About This Project

The Creekside Residence project involved a comprehensive renovation and addition to a 1950s home, skillfully transformed by our Austin architectural team into a mid-century modern retreat. The retired couple who owns the property sought a design that would not only invite natural light but also accommodate their diverse hobbies in a contemporary and streamlined environment. The original layout presented challenges, with a fragmented floor plan characterized by step-downs and a central living area that felt dim and disconnected from the picturesque backyard views of the adjoining creek. To address these concerns, we reimagined the interior spaces by raising all floors to a uniform level, effectively eliminating the sunken rooms and creating a more cohesive and open floor plan. Our design approach prioritized maximizing natural light. We replaced the traditional hip roofline with a modern single slope, integrating clerestory windows that frame the treetop views and flood the interior with daylight. The introduction of strategically placed new windows further enhances the connection to the serene outdoor landscape. At the heart of the home, an expansive open-concept kitchen and living area now occupy what were once underutilized rooms. The kitchen features an oversized island, elegant quartzite countertops, and upper glass cabinets that echo the design of the clerestory windows, creating a harmonious aesthetic throughout the space. Large sliding doors seamlessly transition the indoor living area to a newly constructed covered deck, which overlooks Shoal Creek and incorporates backyard amenities such as a bocce ball court and thoughtfully paved walkways. The exterior of the Creekside Residence is finished with durable, low-maintenance cement plank siding and a sleek metal roof, all presented in a soothing palette of neutral grays and whites. A striking red door serves as a vibrant focal point, welcoming visitors to this beautifully renovated home that masterfully blends modern design with the natural beauty of its surroundings.
