Green Roots Urban Barn

The GRuB Farmhouse stands as a beacon of community support and innovative design, dedicated to the mission of the non-profit organization, Garden-Raised (urban) Bounty (GRuB), based in Olympia, WA. This collaborative construction project, initiated in 2007, aimed to provide vital services to at-risk youth and low-income families in Thurston and Mason Counties. The design process commenced with the involvement of GRuB staff and local community members, guided by the Seattle-based firm, Living Shelter Design. Subsequently, Lucid 9 Design took the lead in refining the farmhouse's design, producing detailed renderings for fundraising efforts, selecting sustainable materials and systems, and completing the comprehensive construction documents. The farmhouse features a range of sustainable design and construction elements, establishing it as a model for environmentally-conscious building in the community. The structure incorporates an Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) wall system by FasWall, utilizing recycled wood chips, which enhances energy efficiency. The upper story is constructed with Advanced Framed FSC wood, ensuring both structural integrity and sustainability. Additional insulation measures, including blown-in insulation with a one-inch rigid layer over plywood, contribute to optimal thermal performance. The innovative rain screen system supports durable fiber cement siding, while the interior boasts hand-troweled earthen stucco and natural plaster surfaces. The farmhouse is equipped with a concrete radiant heat system and a heat recovery ventilator, promoting exceptional indoor air quality. Meticulous attention to detail is evident in the use of reclaimed, sustainably harvested materials that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), further aligning with GRuB's commitment to sustainability. The successful realization of this project was made possible through the dedication and generosity of GRuB staff, volunteers, and community supporters, alongside contributions from local government agencies. Ultimately, the GRuB Farmhouse not only fulfills its role as a community service center but also serves as an educational model for sustainable living, showcasing the power of collaboration in creating impactful change.
