About This Project

The Retro Cobalt Kitchen project is a vibrant and thoughtful transformation that embodies the unique vision of a young, plant-loving couple eager to infuse their home with personality while adhering to a budget. With one homeowner being an artist with a penchant for bold colors, the couple explored various cabinet color options, ultimately selecting a custom hue—Benjamin Moore’s Evening Blue. This striking cabinetry is beautifully complemented by clear Alder in a natural stain, creating a balanced and inviting atmosphere. The design pays homage to the original style of the home, which dates back to the 1950s, through the retro, Mid-Mod Squares tile backsplash in custom colors sourced from Mercury Mosaics. This backdrop adds a playful yet sophisticated touch, seamlessly merging with the overall aesthetic. While the fundamental layout of the kitchen remained largely intact, the introduction of a new pantry and baking center on the refrigerator wall significantly enhances functionality and storage capacity. In addition, the main living area underwent substantial modifications. The wall separating the kitchen and dining room was removed, fostering an open-concept feel that promotes interaction and flow. A small doorway connecting the dining and living rooms was transformed into a larger arch, further enhancing the spaciousness. The original wood floors, carefully uncovered beneath layers of linoleum, received a fresh stain, revitalizing their natural beauty. The homeowners also took on a DIY project to demolish the wall that once sectioned off the stairs, replacing it with a slatted wood partition. Initially envisioned as a reeded wall, they added structural boxes for additional support, ultimately enriching the design with character. The result is a kitchen that not only reflects the couple's eclectic taste but also provides a warm, functional space that they cherish using daily.
