About This Project

The Mission Kansas Farmhouse project involved a transformative second-story remodel of a historic 1904 home in Mission, Kansas. Originally updated in the 1970s with a low-pitched roof and metal siding, the house required a comprehensive redesign to harmonize its facade with the surrounding neighborhood while preserving the interior finishes that had been carefully updated in the last decade. The design challenge was met with innovative solutions, including the installation of a new roof structure that incorporated tapered LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) beams. This approach not only enhanced the overall aesthetics but also aligned the new roofline with the main home, achieving a seamless integration of old and new. A distinctive sill detail was introduced to create a visual break in the siding transition, effectively defining the newly constructed gable structure. Attention to detail was paramount, particularly in reconstructing the front porch columns. The existing columns had sunk and fallen out of plumb over the years, necessitating a complete rebuilding with proper footings to ensure stability and longevity. To maintain the historical integrity of the farmhouse, we carefully reused limestone from the original structure and incorporated old brick to elevate the handrail height, enhancing both safety and visual appeal. The custom tapered columns, crafted from durable PVC, offer a modern yet classic finish that complements the farmhouse’s character. The outcome of this project is a stunning example of transitional design that balances historical charm with contemporary functionality. The newly remodeled Mission Kansas Farmhouse stands as a testament to skilled craftsmanship and thoughtful design choices, creating a welcoming space that enhances the beauty of its surroundings. This project not only revitalizes a historic home but also sets a standard for future renovations in the area, showcasing innovative solutions that respect the past while embracing the future.
