In a quest to gain additional living space on this Santa Monica corner lot, the decision was made to develop a second-story Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) above the existing garage. This addition was meticulously designed to harmonize with the original architectural character of the home, ensuring that the new structure feels like a natural extension rather than an afterthought. The project required a thoughtful approach to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the property while maximizing the functionality of the space. A small portion at the rear of the garage, which was previously utilized as a laundry area, was transformed into a stairway leading to the upper level. This clever use of space not only enhances accessibility but also adds to the overall design flow. Upon ascending to the ADU, residents are greeted by a well-appointed bathroom that doubles as a laundry area, featuring a practical Jack-and-Jill layout. This innovative configuration connects the shower space to both the hallway and the vanity/laundry zone, providing convenience without sacrificing style. The shower area also links the vanity and the bedroom through a similar Jack-and-Jill design, promoting an open and airy atmosphere.
