Looking back at our latest Small Backyards, we had the pleasure of giving some new life into a row of small yards in Greater Thurston County. We had a mission to not only get the most out of each property but to make it look good, complement the personality of the new or existing home as appropriate and provide additional space for our clients to enjoy their lives. Every single backyard we've encountered has its own issues to contend with, such as space restrictions and differing amounts of sun. In order to do so, we used design strategies such as vertical gardening to provide green space at the same time without taking up much floor area. We chose Pacific Northwest native plants that will grow well in this area so the garden will be easy to maintain and we can be assured they will be sustainable. Raised garden beds used durable materials such as reclaimed wood to infuse an organic touch while enhancing ecological sustainability. Among the most unique aspects of this was the custom patio spaces that were constructed. The newest addition was permeable pavers that make a nice surface to walk on as well as help to drain water something that is quite important in our rains-on-the-weekend climate. These patios are ideal spots for relaxation and mingling with others while blending in with the surrounding foliage. Our team met some logistical challenges during the , including a site with poor access for heavy equipment. By collaborating and thinking outside the box, we managed to practically apply our envison while staying within the constraints of the client budget and time. What emerged was a beautiful array of backyards, each customized to the owner's specifications. Our clients loved the results. These tiny lots were transformed into colourful, functional gardens that did not just increase their property value and enable them to live life at ease inside and out all year round but they turned their back garden into beautiful little haven.
