This ongoing project began in 2014 and focuses on planting native plants in a garden bed situated beneath a row of 60-year-old spruce trees, which serve as a natural backdrop. The space, once utilized as a zip line run for the homeowner's children, now stands as a testament to the beauty and resilience of shade gardening, a discipline often regarded as more challenging than traditional sunlit gardening. The design choices made throughout this project emphasize the importance of selecting plants that thrive in limited sunlight, as the area now receives only 1-2 hours of morning sun, with additional challenges posed by a recently installed 6-foot tall privacy fence that blocks western light. This significant reduction in sunlight resulted in a notable decline in the health of several azalea shrubs, with three succumbing entirely and a year marked by the absence of blooms. Nevertheless, the homeowner's dedication to nurturing this garden continues, as they seek to adapt and refine their planting strategies to accommodate the evolving conditions. The craftsmanship involved in this project is evident in the meticulous planning and execution of each planting phase. A detailed site plan, showcased in the photo set titled "Geothermal," outlines the layout of the garden bed, which spans an impressive 65 feet wide by 165 feet deep.
