In 2000, my brother Matt and his friend launched Cutting Crew while working their regular jobs. When Matt’s former partner left the business I helped Matt with the extra jobs that needed to be done. At that time, my father and I joined Matt as partners at that time. As a father of a five-year-old and a newborn, I thought “This will give me a little extra income; Who couldn’t use more money?” Little did I know at that time that it was the beginning of my new dream career. Before I became full-time with Cutting Crew, I commuted to my “regular” job with Hewlett Packard/Bank of America and took the Metra train into downtown Chicago for work every day. The best part of my day was my walks outside to various service call locations. It didn’t matter if it was ten degrees below zero; at least I was not sitting in an office. At 4 p.m. I returned home, picked up my equipment trailer, and worked on my clients' properties until it got dark. In addition, I worked on larger landscaping jobs on the weekends. The three of us covered territory from Chicago to the northwestern and southern suburbs. In 2003, my brother left our company to continue with his career; my father was very close to retirement and left at the same time. Therefore, I had to make the tough decision to continue in the corporate job or make the leap and work at the landscaping business full-time. Starting a new small business was risky, but I already had an established customer base and I was so used to my working hours I didn’t need my alarm clock anymore! Most importantly, I knew deep in my heart I wanted to be in the landscaping business and I still do. We quickly added patios, hardscapes, and snow removal during the winter months. Our business began as a customer referral-based business, so providing a service that exceeds my clients’ expectations is very important to me. I take great pride in our craftsmanship and quality, along with the long-standing relationships I have had with clients; several of them have been with me for more than 15 years!
